Sound Doctrine

He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Titus 1:9

In last week’s blog entitled Work Out Your Salvation we discussed the importance of watching out for false prophets and teachers – a warning that is repeated over and over in the Word of God. Why? Because . . .

The Spirit clearly says that in the later times some will abandon the faith and following deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 1 Timothy 4:1

You have to remember that Satan is the great deceiver – and in these last days he is going to do all he can to take as many people to hell with him – and if he can deceive Christians – even better.

Even Jesus taught this in Matthew 24:24

For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect –if possible. See I have told you ahead of time.

So, how do we make sure that we are not deceived? By holding firm to the trustworthy message as it is taught to us in the Word of God – the ‘sound doctrine’. Which means we have to know God’s Word and live in obedience to what it teaches us. We can’t pick only what we like and leave out what we don’t like.

Unfortunately, in this day and hour, there are many who teach the doctrine of demons and not the sound doctrine of God’s Word.

2 Timothy 4:3 teaches us:

A time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from truth and turn aside to myths.

This is why it is so important for you to know what the Bible says for yourself!

The Lord wants to teach you, by his Holy Word and by his Holy Spirit. If you read, study, ponder and pray the Bible for yourself, you will discover, without question, the sound doctrine of God’s Word.

This is confirmed in 1 John 2:27:

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things, and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit – just as it has taught you remain in him.

Remember . . .

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God’s Word is perfect – the ways of men are flawed. Trust the sound doctrine of God’s Word first and foremost and you will not be deceived.
