Brokenhearted

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time. Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT)

I must confess, situations in my family and with our children have left me brokenhearted.

God teaches us in his Word that those who seek after righteousness will have many troubles. No one should ever think that following Jesus frees you from having troubles, trials and sorrow in your life. If anything it is the opposite!

Do situations in your life leave you brokenhearted?

Right now, mine do!  We have five children. We are a combined family. Three from one family, one from the other and then we had one child together. We were married when the children were very young and we all grew in the Lord together.

We strived each day to raise our children according to the Word of God. They were all water baptized in Jesus name and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We had Bible study most everyday in our home and sang praises and worshiped. The four oldest went to Christian school for the majority of their school years. Our youngest was homeschooled.

Our children are all grown now, and these words of Jesus have come true in our life. . .

Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other! From now on families will be split apart, three in favor of me, and two against—or two in favor and three against.

 ‘Father will be divided against son
    and son against father;
mother against daughter
    and daughter against mother;
and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law
    and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’”

God’s Word is always true!

Why is their division? Because each person has their own will to choose what they want for their life. Jesus says families will be split because some will stand for the ways of God, and some will not. Even though we may love our children with all our heart and never want them to go through the things they are – the choices they make are their own. We as parents can’t take on the “coulda, woulda, shoulda”!  We did the best we could. We cannot make their choices for them. We cannot go against their will – just like God never goes against ours. We all have to make our own choices.

The big question is – “How do we make it through these times that leave us brokenhearted?”  Here again the Lord proves that his Word is true!

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Psalm 34:18

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. Psalm 147:3

I have learned when I am brokenhearted the Lord is close. If I rest in his peace during these times of trouble, trials and sorrow he always sees me through. If it were not for resting in his peace and trusting in his Word, I would never have handled the heartbreaking things that have happened in my life and in our family. Praise God he is always faithful and true.

Jesus said in John 16:33:

I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

The Word teaches us ahead of time that the righteous person will face many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time!  Rest in that.  Trust in that. The Lord will see you through whatever has left you brokenhearted.

I am standing and trusting that God’s Word is true here as well . . .

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.  Proverbs 22:6
